We had the quintessential white sofa in our last home trying to achieve the perfect coastal look. However, we have two big dogs, and I got sick of constantly cleaning our slipcovers! I was determined to make leather furniture work with coastal style in our new home. I ended up finding a beautiful brown leather sofa from Costco that looks as high-end as Pottery Barn for our living room. Our living room doesn’t have a tv, so we use that space to visit with friends and family. It sits right across from our kitchen in an open floor plan, so it’s the perfect place to relax while we’re preparing meals for guests.

Our larger family room is where we wanted to kick back, relax, and watch movies. We have a big screen tv and wanted a large comfortable sofa where humans and dogs could co-mingle together. After falling in love with our brown leather sofa in our living room, I decided to buy the sectional version of it for our coastal family room. We couldn’t be happier with this decision!

Coastal Leather Sectional
This brown leather sectional is absolutely perfect for our coastal family room, and it’s so comfortable and easy to clean. I wipe it down with leather cleaner and conditioner about once a month, and it continues to look brand new. I did buy a couple fleece blankets from Target to lay down across the cushions, so the dogs didn’t scratch it when they’re up there (which is all the time!).
Some leather sectionals and sofas can look outdated or overly traditional, but this one has a more modern aesthetic without being low to the ground (which I hate!).
Always build a mood board when putting together your pieces, so you can see how they coordinate. I used Canva to build a free mood board, so I could choose the perfect decor items to complement our coastal leather sectional.

Balance a Coastal Leather Sectional with Light Wood Tones & Textiles
To keep your space from looking too dark, use lighter wood toned furniture mixed with neutral and blue decor pieces to complement your coastal leather sectional. A lighter palette help evoke that airy coastal vibe and keep your space looking modern and fresh.
Ivory and blue throw pillows help to lighten up the dark leather sectional while a white chunky knit throw brings in texture. Amazon, Target, and Pottery Barn are my go-to’s for pillows. Pottery Barn has great end of season sales, and it’s the perfect time to snatch up pillow covers and throw blankets at amazing deals.
If you find a pillow cover you absolutely love, my advice is to buy it right away since styles are always selling out. But, you can usually find better deals if you wait until the end of the season. Amazon’s throw pillow assortment has gotten so much better lately, and their styles are affordable and less likely to sell out as fast.
Amazon is also a great place for throw blankets. I found our knit throw blankets on Amazon, and they are amazing. I ended up buying 3 of them. The quality is impeccable and they’re super comfy!
I highly recommend buying solid wood furniture for the highest quality. I chose this gorgeous solid wood square coffee table from Wayfair. It’s quite possibly my favorite furniture piece in the entire house. The sectional sofa is 126” L x 99” W, so I needed a coffee table that was light wood and big enough to fill up the space.
Choose a coffee table that is 1/2-3/4 the size of your sofa, and make sure there is plenty of space to walk around. This coffee table is 40 x 40” and fit perfectly in front of our sectional. It has a slight distressed finish and two drawers, which are great for hiding remotes. It pairs perfectly with this light blue vintage rug.
I found a large seagrass tray to hold coffee table books and decor and bring in some natural texture to our coastal space. The one I bought from Wayfair is sold out, but I found a similar one on Amazon.
Choose a tray that is at least half the length of your table, so it doesn’t get overwhelmed and look tiny.
Our TV is 75”, so finding a solid wood console table that was long enough and that fit the coastal aesthetic I was going for was a bit challenging. I found the perfect one at Wayfair. I envision us having this console table for years to come. This stunning table is 80” long with gorgeous panel detailing on the cabinet doors that blends rustic and coastal styling.
This white console table from Joss & Main was in the entryway of our last house, but it works perfectly as a sofa table in our coastal family room. For a simple upgrade, change out hardware to better match your style. I upgraded our hardware to coordinate with the bronze theme I incorporated throughout this home. My exact sofa table is sold out, but I found a very similar one from Wayfair.
A large glass table lamp, navy blue vases with pampas grass, and a wood tray with beads are the perfect finishing touches for your sofa table to bring out all the coastal vibes. Add a flameless candle to warm up the space.
I am obsessed with this gorgeous coastal wood lamp. It was actually the last piece I bought for our family room. It adds a sense of sophistication and also acts as a nice statement piece.
For our mantel, I chose a beautiful, landscaped art piece from Studio Mcgee’s line at Target. It’s 48” long, which was exactly the length I wanted to create a statement center piece. I love Studio McGee’s products but these pieces don’t last. Jump on it when you find something you love!
I probably spend the most time searching for art pieces during the decorating process. There are SO many choices, and I like about 10% of them! Art can also get really pricey, so look for inspiration from designers. Find a piece that you love and search on more reasonably priced sites like Wayfair or Amazon to find similar options. This Studio McGee art is sold out, but I found a similar art piece at Wayfair.
I complemented the art on the mantel with wood candle holders from World Market. Believe it or not, I’ve had these for about 8 years now, and I still love them. They’re sold out, but I found some similar ones from Wayfair.
Dried pampas grass adds a nice touch of nature to your space. I try to minimize use of fake plants if I can help it, so these are a great way to bring in natural elements with zero maintenance.
If you are contemplating decorating your coastal family room with a leather sectional, you should totally go for it! I have never regretted my decision. As long as we have dogs, I see leather furniture in our forever future.
