If you’ve been searching for navy blue bathroom ideas that feel coastal without going overly beachy, this powder room makeover might give you a few ideas. Our small bathroom went from traditional and dated to bold, fresh, and timeless with navy cabinetry, warm brass accents, and subtle striped wallpaper.

When we moved into our home, this bathroom was one of the first spaces I wanted to tackle. It was ultra-traditional (think 90’s brown) and definitely not my style.

How to Create a Modern Coastal Bathroom

Creating a modern coastal bathroom is all about balance. You want depth and personality, but you also want the space to feel fresh and timeless. In this navy blue bathroom, I layered bold color with crisp white tile, warm brass accents, and subtle stripes to keep it feeling coastal without going beachy. The goal was simple: rich and inviting, but still light and livable.

I also create a mood board before committing to finishes. Things that look great in your head don’t always work once you see them together. Seeing the navy vanity, white tile, brass fixtures, and striped wallpaper all in one place made it much easier to move forward confidently.

Once the vision felt cohesive on paper, it was time to bring it to life.

Navy Blue Bathroom Vanity

Almost all of the vanities I chose in our other bathrooms were white, but this space felt like the right place to have a little fun. I chose a navy blue vanity with a white quartz countertop and champagne bronze hardware, and it instantly set the tone.

The navy adds depth to this small bathroom, while the white countertop keeps it crisp. The warm hardware softens the bold color and ties in beautifully with the rest of the finishes.

White Subway Tile Backsplash

A lot of the bathroom vanities I looked at had built-in splash guards along the back and sides. We had that in our last house, but I never really loved the look as much as a tiled backsplash. I made sure this vanity came clean so we could add tile instead.

I went with classic white subway tile to complement the coastal palette I was going for. It’s timeless, super versatile, and literally goes with everything. It’s also one of the most affordable tile options, and you can find it at any hardware store.

Coastal Gold Mirror

I debated between a round and rectangular mirror, but ultimately chose a gold-framed mirror that balanced the width of the vanity perfectly. A good rule of thumb is to choose a mirror that’s 2–6 inches narrower than the vanity. With a 30-inch vanity, this 24-inch mirror felt just right.

The warm gold finish pairs beautifully with the champagne bronze fixtures and adds contrast against the navy.

Champagne Bronze Bathroom Fixtures

I originally had more high-end faucets in mind, but I found a Delta faucet in champagne bronze that felt elevated without blowing the budget. I paired it with the coordinating towel ring and toilet paper holder for a cohesive look.

Mixing navy with warm metallics is one of my favorite ways to keep a coastal bathroom feeling layered and inviting.

Modern Coastal Bathroom Lighting

I had originally wanted to do more of a coastal cage light, but they hung down too far for our ceiling height. Luckily, I fell in love with this natural brass semi-flush pendant at Wayfair for less than $100, and it works perfectly in the space.

Blue Striped Wallpaper

I had been obsessing over wallpapered rooms on Pinterest for years, but I was never brave enough to commit. This coastal powder room felt like the perfect place to finally dive in head first. I really wanted to try installing it myself, but I’ve never done wallpaper before, so I had our contractor handle it — and it turned out even better than I expected.

Even though this navy blue bathroom is tiny, the striped wallpaper doesn’t make it feel busy at all. If anything, it makes the space feel more open and intentional. The wallpaper has a subtle threaded design, so it looks textured even though it’s smooth to the touch, and it’s absolutely gorgeous in person.

Finishing Touches

Since this bathroom is small, I didn’t want to crowd it with decor. The walls are kept completely clean, with the exception of the towel ring and toilet paper holder. I thought about hanging art above the toilet, but I didn’t want to put holes in my beautiful wallpaper or risk tearing it with peel and stick.

I found this beautiful hand soap and lotion set from William Sonoma. We have so many real plants in our home that I only use a handful of faux ones, but the counter needed a little more love, so I picked up this faux boxwood plant from Target. It’s sold out, but I found a similar one on Amazon.

I got all of my bathroom hand towels from Etsy. They’re Turkish towels and amazing quality. Plus, they’re only $5 a piece. They have tons of colors and prints to choose from. I’ve had ours for a couple of years now, so it’s probably time to order a fresh set.

Budget Breakdown for This Navy Blue Bathroom

We were working within a budget for our entire home renovation, and we ended up spending just over $1,000 on this navy blue bathroom makeover. I find it helpful to nerd out and create a spreadsheet that lists each item going into the space, how much it costs, and the website link. It keeps everything organized and prevents those “how did this get so expensive?” moments.

Having everything planned out before ordering made it much easier to stay on track and avoid impulse purchases.

Most major purchases are linked below. Pricing may vary depending on availability and current retailer promotions. Small decor items were not included in the total.

Even though this is a small powder room, it’s one of my favorite spaces in the house. It feels bold but still timeless, and it finally reflects the coastal style I wanted from the beginning.

Navy Blue Bathroom FAQs

What colors pair well with navy blue in a bathroom?

Whites, brass, polished or satin nickel, light wood tones, and soft neutrals complement navy beautifully, creating a balanced and coastal-inspired palette. Fun prints like stripes and florals can also help bring visual interest to your navy blue bathroom.

Is navy blue too dark for a small bathroom?

Not at all—when paired with light tile, good lighting, and crisp white accents, navy blue can add depth and elegance even in small spaces.

Is navy blue a timeless bathroom color?

Yes. Navy has been used in traditional and coastal interiors for decades. Unlike trend-driven colors, navy reads as classic and versatile, especially when paired with neutral finishes like white tile and brass hardware.

What hardware looks best with a navy bathroom vanity?

Warm metals like brass and champagne bronze add contrast and warmth against navy cabinetry. Polished nickel and satin nickel also work beautifully if you prefer a cooler, more traditional look.

Should you use navy on the walls or the vanity?

If you’re hesitant to commit, using navy on the vanity is a great way to introduce bold color without overwhelming the space. It grounds the room while still allowing the walls and tile to keep things bright.

Is wallpaper a good idea in a small powder room?

Yes, especially in a powder room where humidity is lower than a full bath. Wallpaper adds personality in a small space and can actually make the room feel more finished and intentional.
