I have always been a plantation shutter girl but I am starting to LOVE roman shades! We’ve had them in our last two houses and I really like how clean and classic they look. They’re especially great if you don’t want to completely block a window with blinds (even gorgeous plantation shutters can kill a view).

Roman shades are the perfect mix of structure and softness. The clean folds, the texture of natural fabric, the way they filter light—it’s all effortlessly coastal. Whether you go with soft linen or a crisp stripe, they add that subtle stylish touch every classic home needs.

Striped Roman Shades

Stripes are quintessential coastal. Whether you go for a narrow ticking stripe or a bold thicker style, stripes bring just the right amount of pattern without overpowering a space. Stick with soft blues, taupes, or gray-on-white for a more understated look or navy for a more nautical vibe (my fave!).

I found some gorgeous striped roman shades for our kitchen from Pottery Barn (pictured above) that completely transformed our space. You can read all about them in my Pottery Barn Riviera Striped Roman Shades Review post.

In our newly renovated bathroom, I ordered custom striped roman shades from Amazon at an unbelievable price. The sellers were really easy to work with and we’re so happy with how it turned out! These add the perfect coastal touch to our navy and white bathroom.

Neutral Linen Roman Shades

If you want something soft and simple, neutral linen roman shades are a coastal essential. They filter sunlight beautifully and have that natural, easy texture that feels both elegant and relaxed.

Opt for warm whites, ivory, or sand tones to blend seamlessly into a classic palette. They’re perfect in living rooms, bedrooms, or any space where you want that airy feel.

Want the linen look on a budget? Amazon has super affordable options that give you the linen look for less.

Natural Material Roman Shades

Coastal design fully embraces natural materials and roman shades are the perfect way to bring this in. Woven bamboo and seagrass bring texture and warmth to your coastal design.

Mix textures intentionally—a striped roman shade next to a woven pendant or a rattan chair feels layered but still easy. These small combinations are what make a coastal home feel lived in and relaxed.

Blue Roman Shades

Soft blue roman shades are an easy way to nod to the ocean without being literal. Choose washed or faded tones that feel sun-bleached rather than bold. Pair them with white walls, light woods, and brushed nickel accents for that crisp, coastal balance.

If you want more depth, mix in darker navy accents elsewhere—a striped throw, navy vanity, or framed coastal art—to ground the space.

Roman shades are one of those timeless pieces that instantly elevate a space. Whether striped, neutral, or linen, they add softness, texture, and just enough structure to make a coastal decorated room feel complete.

I hope this gave you some good coastal roman shades inspiration. Happy decorating!

Coastal Roman Shades FAQ

What makes a roman shade feel coastal?

It’s all about the fabric and the feel. Light linen, soft cotton, and woven textures keep things easy and natural. Add in neutral tones or soft ocean blues, and you’ve got that calm, breezy look that just works in a coastal home.

Are striped roman shades still in style?

Always. A subtle stripe never goes out of style—it’s classic, simple, and adds a little personality without feeling loud. Choose narrow ticking stripes or tone-on-tone patterns in soft blue, taupe, or gray. Go for navy stripes for a more nautical feel.

Should I choose inside or outside mount roman shades?

Inside mounts give you that tailored, built-in look (especially nice if you’ve got pretty trim). Outside mounts feel a little softer and make windows look taller, so it really depends on the room and how much coverage you want.

Can I layer roman shades with curtains?

Yes—and it looks beautiful. A light linen panel layered over a simple roman shade adds texture and makes a space feel more finished. Stick with similar tones so it feels intentional, not busy.

Where do roman shades work best?

Pretty much anywhere. They’re great in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens—anywhere you want something clean and soft that still looks put together. They filter light in the prettiest way, which makes them perfect for coastal spaces that get a lot of sun.
