Our kitchen, dining room, and living room are all open concept, and our living room is pretty small. There is a small strip of space that separates the living room from the dining area. However, when you walk into our living room, you basically stare at the back of our sectional. We needed something behind the sectional to create some real separation of these spaces.

We had a beautiful white console table behind the leather sectional of our last house and the buyers of our home bought it. In fact, they bought a lot of our furniture and decor, but I have had a lot of fun redecorating our new house! We needed a new coastal console table to put behind our sofa. I really liked our old one, so I wanted to find something similar.

When considering a coastal sofa table purchase, think about function in addition to beauty. Do you want shelves to store things on? Do you need drawers for storage? I like things to look beautiful in our home but I also consider how I’m going to use them before choosing furniture pieces.

The sliding door to our backyard is right next to our living room. Since we have dogs, I like to keep some supplies in the console table (mainly poop bags and baby wipes for their feet), so I needed one with drawers. I found a beautiful solid wood antique white console table with drawers at Home Depot. I buy a ton of stuff from Wayfair but Home Depot sometimes has the exact same styles for less money. Always shop around to see if you can find a better deal from other trusted sites!

Coastal Console Table New Hardware

I wanted to update the hardware on this console table, so I found some gorgeous polished nickel knobs at Amazon and swapped them out. Changing hardware is a really easy and inexpensive way to give your console table a new look. It also made this table feel more coastal, which is what I wanted!

Coastal Console Table Mood Board

Before I bought this coastal console table, I built a mood board to see how it would look with my existing living room furniture and decor. Use free sites like Canva to build a quick mood board when you’re decorating a room. This is a non-negotiable for me! I can’t tell you how many times I changed my mind on pieces I thought for sure would work.

Sofa Table Styling Tips

Styling a console table or sofa table is really easy because you generally have some nice space to work with. Below are some easy tips to follow.

1. Go for Varying Heights

Coastal Sofa Table Styling

Decorative objects with varying height helps create visual balance on your console table. Place taller decor pieces on the ends and layer in shorter decorative objects across the middle.

2. Lighten the Mood

Coastal Console Table Lamp

I always have a table lamp on my sofa tables. It’s so convenient when you’re sitting on the couch to reach back and turn the lamp on when it’s sitting right behind your head. Not only is a table lamp functional but it’s the perfect statement piece for your sofa table.

Choose table lamps that are 30” or taller. Your lamp is a statement piece so it shouldn’t get lost in the design.

3. Anchor Your Table

Anchor your table with wicker baskets across the bottom. This is a great way to bring in organic materials to warm up the look of your sofa table. They’re also perfect to use for storage. If your console table has a shelf, line them across the bottom. Otherwise, you can set them on the floor. Choose two or three baskets and make sure they adequately fill the space.

If baskets aren’t your thing, decorative poufs are a great alternative!

4. Bring in Nature

A vase with real flowers or faux stems helps bring a touch of nature to your table. It also helps bring in color. Add a tall vase or jar and add your favorite faux stems to it. Fresh flowers can also add a beautiful touch, they’re just a little more upkeep!

Dried pampas grass is another great vase filler. I decorate with pampas grass a lot throughout our home.

5. Add a Bowl or Tray

I follow the rule of 3’s when decorating a console table to keep things simple and uncluttered. With a lamp and vase on the ends, an oversized bowl or tray is the perfect centerpiece for your sofa table. If your bowl is smaller, place it on top of a book stack to give it some height.

Coastal Lamps

Because my table was white and I already have a ton of wicker in our living room, I opted to bring in color with a blue lamp. However, a simple white or glass lamp can complement a coastal console table. Or go ultra coastal with a wicker lamp.

Coastal Vases

Pottery Barn is my go-to for vases. I just find their quality is impeccable and they design the most beautiful vases. However, they sell out fast and then they’re gone for good. If you find a vase you love, buy it immediately. It’s a great investment piece you’ll have for years to come.

Coastal Bowls & Trays

A simple natural wood bowl or tray is a perfect coastal decor piece for your console table. Silver and white bowls will also complement coastal style in a more elevated way.

Coastal Baskets & Poufs

I actually considered doing a fun blue and white striped pouf for under our console table but ultimately went with wicker baskets (which I love!). Both baskets and poufs are great ways to anchor your console table.

I hope this post gave you some great inspiration for decorating your coastal console table. Happy decorating!
