I have been wanting to renovate our primary bathroom since we closed on our new house last year. The shower and bathtub were original to the home (almost 20 years) and felt really dated. The previous owners made some cosmetic updates to the bathroom but the framed shower was full of rust, the vanity was falling apart, and storage was minimal. Long story short, this bathroom needed a major overhaul.

The Coastal Bathroom Renovation Begins
When we started planning our bathroom renovation, I not only wanted it to be beautiful but also to be super functional. I also wanted it to be a classic coastal design that would stand the test of time.
Our bathroom is a decent size but our vanity was pretty small for a primary bathroom (67″). Our last house had single 48″ vanities that faced each other, and it gave me and my husband our own designated space. Even though this vanity in our new house was bigger, it didn’t give us near the storage of our previous individual vanities. Increasing storage was a non negotiable for this remodel.
For this bathroom design, I wanted something classic coastal where you wouldn’t be able to tell if it was remodeled ten years ago or ten days ago – like that timeless! My first choice was a classic white vanity. I mean, what could be more timeless? But, I also wanted the walls and tile to be white, so I was really feeling something with a bit more color for the vanity.
Ultimately, I decided to do a custom vanity in Sherwin Williams Cyberspace, and I’m so glad I did. The color is rich, moody, and coastal in a way that still feels timeless—and the result turned out better than I ever expected!

Before I begin any decorating project (and especially a renovation!), I always build a mood board. Building a mood board allows you to see the full vision of your space with all the pieces together. That way, you can see how all your furniture, decor, fixtures, etc. coordinate with one another. It’s easy to make swaps to find the perfect combinations.
Technically this is more of a design board since it includes all our actual selections—but I always call it a mood board because it captures the whole vibe.
Why We Chose a Custom Vanity
Originally, I found a navy blue bathroom vanity on Wayfair that fit our 67″ space. When I showed it to our contractor, he said he could make a custom one for around the same price. Come again??
I’ve never done a custom vanity before, so my creative wheels started spinning. A custom vanity means: you pick the style, you pick the color, you pick the layout and storage functions. This was amazing!
In addition to the look and feel, I needed this vanity to function. Meaning, we needed storage and lots of it. I have A LOT of toiletries (feel me anyone??). I also like to keep a set of cleaning supplies under every bathroom sink to make weekend cleaning a breeze and not force me to lug products from bathroom to bathroom.
Pinterest had a lot of inspiration of storage towers used on bathroom vanities. From a functionality standpoint, it seemed like a no brainer. I just wasn’t sure I would love it in a dark blue color. I was able to find some examples online to show our contractor and I really fell in love with this idea.
If you have a trusted contractor, explore custom vanity options. It gives you so much more flexibility in the look and function of your bathroom vanity. Plus, we were able to do it for the same price I would have paid on Wayfair with a completely custom design and with arguably much better quality.
Sherwin-Williams Cyberspace: The Bold Color That Made It
I was this close to choosing a white vanity. It’s safe, it’s coastal, and it’s easy to match with everything. But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted something with depth—something that would feel bold but still fit into a relaxed, classic coastal palette.
Sherwin-Williams Cyberspace struck the perfect balance. It’s a moody blue that reads both classic and dramatic. It adds just enough contrast against our lighter walls and floors, and it pairs beautifully with the polished nickel hardware and organic textured mirrors. It’s the kind of color that elevates the whole room. Benjamin Moore Hale Navy has been my go-to blue for years but I wanted to step outside my comfort zone with this project and it 100% paid off!
If you’re considering a dark colored bathroom vanity, consider the lighting in the space. Our bathroom has a large window and gets a ton of natural light so the dark blue totally works.
The Game-Changing Vanity Center Storage Tower
Here’s where things really get good. The center tower storage completely changed how we use this vanity. With limited countertop space and no room for extra storage furniture, we needed a way to keep things organized without clutter.
The tower gave us vertical storage we didn’t even realize we were missing—perfect for stashing skincare, hair products, towels, or anything that usually ends up scattered around. For vanities under 72 inches, this is such a smart solution. It makes the entire setup feel more like custom cabinetry than a standard bathroom install, and it helps keep everything feeling organized and tucked away.
The Finished Look
Since I was going for a classic coastal design, I paired our navy vanity with polished nickel hardware, faucets, and light fixtures. This really gave it a more elevated, timeless look. Gold, brass, or bronze also go beautifully with navy, but for this classic space, I went for a look that was more traditional.
I added a beachy touch with a oval rattan mirrors over each sink. I wanted this bathroom to feel classic and upscale but also warm and inviting. Organic materials like wicker, rattan, and cane are perfect for bringing a laid back seaside vibe to your space.
Everything blends so beautifully together. It’s pretty in photos, but even better in real life!
I’m honestly obsessed with our bathroom. This vanity didn’t just solve our storage issues—it transformed the look for our bathroom. It’s proof that coastal bathrooms don’t have to be all white or beachy in the traditional sense. Sometimes a bold paint color and thoughtful storage layout make all the difference.
