Our last house had a large deck and patio area for outdoor entertaining. In fact, I bought all of our outdoor furniture to fit that space perfectly, and three years later…. we moved! We’re now in our forever home with an amazing view but a small deck to fit all of our outdoor furniture and decor. So, I had to get creative with how to lay out our new “floor plan”.

Our deck is about 13′ L x 11′ W, which isn’t tiny but it’s nowhere near as big as our last space. Decorating a small deck can feel limiting, but with the right pieces and a clear plan, it can become a favorite spot to relax or entertain. I’m sharing how I turned our tiny deck into a coastal-inspired space with practical furniture, classic navy details, and a layout that makes the most of every inch.

We wanted our small deck to have a spot for an outdoor living room, and that starts with sofa sectional. I was actually worried our existing sectional wouldn’t fit on this deck, but thankfully it did! To give it a refresh, I swapped our boring beige cushion covers for new navy and white striped ones from Amazon. This added a classic coastal touch to our deck that feels crisp and timeless. This was a super easy way to bring in pattern without overwhelming the small space.

Rug That Defines the Space
An outdoor rug is one of the most important pieces of your deck design. The right rug really helps anchor a seating area, especially on a small deck.
Our old rug worked perfectly in our last house but it was too small for this deck. Our sectional sofa extended way past the edges (but the pups didn’t mind!).
I needed a rug that would match my new navy/white striped cushion covers, coordinate with my existing outdoor dining cushions, AND be big enough for my furniture but small enough to actually fit on the deck. This was a tall order!
After measuring my deck and furniture, I needed a rug that was between 10′ 6-11′ wide and long, which meant I needed a square rug. First off, rectangle rugs are the most popular so looking for square rugs, you’re already at a slight disadvantage for choices. A 10′ square rug was too small and a 12′ square rug was too big, and of course almost every rug I liked were those sizes.
Luckily, I found the perfect rug on Rugs.com. It’s 10′ 8 and has a modern coastal vibe with different shades of blue from cobalt to navy (totally reminds me of the ocean!). Plus, it fits perfectly under our sectional, leaving a few inches on either side and is long enough to fit our entire outdoor dining table and chairs on it.
Notice below how I ditched the outdoor throw pillows. I was so tired of them blowing away. These cushion covers have ties on them, so they stay in place. I do not miss chasing pillows across the yard!
Matching blues isn’t always easy and I didn’t have any good reviews pictures to go off of. I took a chance and it totally paid off! It’s one of the best rugs I’ve ever bought.
When looking for outdoor rugs for your deck or patio, always go for polypropylene material. It’s insanely easy to clean and can take a literal beating from weather, your kids, or your crazy dogs!
Outdoor Dining Table & Umbrella
An outdoor dining table is a must if your small deck has the space for it. Ours fits neatly on one side of the deck, and the tilt adjustable white umbrella gives much-needed shade since we are nestled in the Rocky Mountains high in the sky. My navy cushions with white piping (shop similar) complement our nautical sofa cushions and make this teak dining set much more comfy to sit at! This dining set not only complements our nautical style but it’s also super functional!
If your deck is too small to fit a larger dining table, go for an outdoor bistro table and chairs. It’s the perfect option for tiny spaces who still want a little dining set up.
A Classic Navy Coastal Palette
I love navy blue so much, and it’s the backbone of this whole design. Using it throughout—from the rug to the striped cushions—helps the deck feel cohesive and intentional. Paired with white accents and natural textures, it delivers that breezy coastal look without feeling busy or cluttered.
If you’re going for a coastal look for your small deck design, choose a shade of blue to be your dominant color and then you can add accent colors to coordinate. I got real wild with white as my accent “color”! LOL
