I’ve actually never owned a queen bed before, but we just bought one for our basement guest room. Right now, I’m on the hunt for the perfect art piece to hang above it. I truly believe art is a total game changer when it comes to coastal bedroom design, so I’m excited to explore different options and find just the right piece to complete the look.

Why Art Matters in a Coastal Bedroom

I think art is one of the most important decor pieces in your bedroom. Art above your bed really draws the eye up and sets the tone for the entire space! I think this about all art. Often times when I walk in a room, the first thing I notice is the wall art or wall decor.

Stylistically, there are a lot of different directions you can take the art. You can do photographs (color or black and white) or painting (abstract or beachy/coastal themes). The goal is to find art that complements the rest of the room while adding a little visual interest above the bed.

Single Statement Piece or Multiple Pieces?

One thing I’m considering is whether to go with a single large piece of art or create a grouping of two or three smaller pieces. I recently wrote about how to hang wall art above a bed, where I dive into how groupings can make a real statement above your bed. Sometimes a large single piece feels bold and clean, while a curated set of prints or paintings add fun, visual interest.

For a queen bed, both options can work well! It’s really just a matter of the style and vibe you want. Our guest room is in the basement and I already have 3 pieces of art above our sofa, so I’m not likely to repeat that exact look. However, it’s good to test out different layouts to find which one coordinates the best (and that you love!).

Size and Scale: What Works for a Queen Bed?

Choosing the right size art is just as important as the style. Too small, and it feels lost above a queen bed; too big, and it overwhelms the space. I’ve already written a super detailed guide on how to hang art above a bed, so definitely read that before you get out your tools!

In general, you want your art to be about 2/3-3/4 the size of your bed. A standard queen bed is 60″ wide, so aim for around 40-45″ wide for your art. This can be one piece or adding smaller pieces together. Hang your art about 8″ above the frame of the bed. If your ceilings are short, keep this in mind when choosing your art piece. You don’t want it bumping against the ceiling, so be sure to leave a few inches of breathing room!

The Best Coastal Art for Bedrooms

The bedroom is for sleeping so I recommending keeping the vibe as calm and chill as possible! I’m all about going bold with fun, colorful prints. However, the bedroom is where you want to dial it back a bit and choose styles that evoke a sense of relaxation and zen. Think soft blues, light greens, and more muted neutral tones. It doesn’t mean you have to be boring! But maybe save the bright colors for another space (like an office where you want to get creative juices flowing!).

Below are a few of my favorite coastal art styles for a queen bed. All of the styles I curated are the perfect size for a queen bed too!

Beach Photography

Beach photography is perfect above a queen bed. Crisp images of shoreline, sand dunes, or crashing waves feel timeless and peaceful. Plus, your bedroom can literally feel like a beach vacation!

Abstract Watercolors

I love a good abstract art piece and have them hung all over the house. Soft blues and greens in flowing, organic shapes add color without literal scenes. They make the perfect art for above your queen bed or any bed for that matter!

Vintage Coastal Maps

I really like this option! It give me total Nantucket vibes. Vintage map art adds a touch of history and charm with a classic nautical vibe.

Seashell & Coral Prints

Illustrations or photographs of shells, coral, or blue flowers bring in natural textures and detail. This is a classic beach look that will instantly elevate your bedroom decor. Look for art in blues, greens, or even pinks!

Sailboat Art

Clean and classic, sailboat pieces bring a subtle nautical touch and work beautifully in coastal bedrooms. I have never been on a sailboat but I am so drawn to them in every way! Every time we’re in Laguna Beach (one of our favorite destinations), we have lunch in Dana Point just so I can eat on the marina with all the sailboats.

Where to Shop for Coastal Wall Art

Wayfair is my go-to for coastal wall art as well as furniture and decor. I love to look at Pottery Barn too (and then try to find lookalikes other places! lol). But you can find great pieces on Amazon, Lamps Plus, or Shutter & Frame too. Before you buy coastal wall art for your queen bed, build a mood board! I build a mood board for literally EVERYTHING!! I cannot stress this enough. Mood board will literally save you from making design mistakes because you can visualize different pieces together.

Coastal Art agove Queen Bed

I recommend Canva for mood boards. I use the paid version so I can remove backgrounds from product images, but their free version is really good too! Just save photos of art pieces you like and add photos of anything in your room already (bed, dresser, rug, etc.) so you can see everything together!

I hope this post gave you some good inspiration for your bedroom design. Happy decorating!

FAQs: Coastal Art Above a Queen Bed

What size art should go above a queen bed?

A good rule of thumb is to choose artwork that’s around 2/3-3/4 the width of your bed—so for a queen bed (60 inches wide), look for art that’s about 40-45 inches wide. You can also create a gallery wall to fill the space if your art is smaller.

Should I hang one piece or a set of two or three?

Either works! A single statement piece adds impact, while a two or three pieces of art can bring symmetry and balance. It really depends on your room’s vibe and how bold you want to go.

How high should I hang art above a queen bed?

Keep about 6 to 10 inches of space between the top of your headboard and the bottom of the art. You want it close enough to feel connected, but not so low that it feels cramped. Eight inches above the bed is my sweet spot!

What colors work best for coastal-style wall art?

Think soft blues, sandy beiges, whites, and driftwood-inspired tones. Anything that reminds you of the sea, sky, or shoreline works beautifully in a coastal bedroom.
