Hale Navy Dresser: An Easy Ikea Dresser Hack

Last Updated on March 23, 2025

Get inspired by the easiest Ikea dresser hack – a beautiful Hale Navy dresser.

When we bought our house, the closet in our bedroom came with an old dark brown Ikea dresser in it. It was tucked perfectly in the corner. My initial thought was to trash it, but that would leave an empty space that didn’t serve much purpose. Plus, it does provide additional storage in the closet, which we needed.

Since we were going to keep this dresser, I wanted to update it to better match my coastal decorating style. Read below to see exactly how easy this Ikea dresser hack was and how you can recreate it for less than $400 (dresser included)!

Hale Navy Dresser

I think Ikea is probably thrilled that the “Ikea hack” trend has caught on like it has. Ikea is well known for having very budget-friendly furniture pieces that can be easily updated. Some super crafty people take it to the next level, even adding things like rattan and cane to their Ikea pieces.

I am not that skilled, nor did I want to invest that much effort into this older dresser. For this Ikea dresser hack, all we needed was some paint and new hardware.

Benjamin Moore Hale Navy paint is a major obsession of mine! I discovered it on Pinterest years ago and have been painting pretty much anything that will stand still this color ever since.

I painted a buffet table Hale Navy in our last house and ended up giving it our neighbor when we moved, as well as our current basement cabinets, nightstands, and this dresser! Some designers may prefer to mix it up, but when I find something I love, I run with it.

In your house, you make the design rules. You’re the one who has to live with it every day, so do what makes you happy. I am never one to follow strict design rules and you shouldn’t either!

Because the Ikea Koppang Dresser is made of particleboard, there was zero prep work involved. We didn’t sand or prime. All we did was dust the dresser and apply 3 coats of Hale Navy paint, which only required a quart size.

We have a paint sprayer for big jobs, but for this we used high-density foam rollers. Use a thin angle brush for detailed sections and to smooth out anything the roller missed.

Coastal Navy Dresser with Satin Nickel Hardware

For the hardware, I actually chose the satin nickel knobs from our old kitchen renovation. I’ve decorated our current house with gold hardware on the main floor but kept satin nickel and chrome upstairs and in our basement.

I’m a classic coastal girl at heart, so using gold anywhere was pushing my limits. I think it’s beautiful and modern, but I honestly prefer silver over gold. I find it more timeless and more coastal!

Because we inherited this furniture with the house, our investment into this Ikea dresser hack was minimum. We paid around $35 for the paint and $32 for the new hardware.

But even if you have to buy the dresser, it’s very inexpensive. You can recreate this exact look for less than $400. It looks much more expensive than it actually is, and the storage is really great!

This was my very first Ikea hack, and I absolutely love how it turned out. I hope this provided you some good inspiration for your next Ikea hack. Happy decorating!
