5 Quick and Easy Freezer Organization Tips for Maximum Storage

5 freezer organization tips_hero

Organize your freezer and keep it that way for good with these easy freezer organization tips and tricks.

I think the freezer is one of most challenging things to keep organized. They generally aren’t that big, and we are trying to cram 100 different things in them! I’ve got some super easy tips to help get your freezer organized and to keep it that way.

How to Organize a Freezer

1. Pull Everything Out of Your Freezer

In order to get and keep your freezer organized, it’s best to start with a nice, clean palette. About twice a year, I do a big freezer cleaning. I pull everything out and set it on the counter.

The freezer can truly become a dumping ground, where we don’t even realize everything that’s living in there. This will help you take inventory of every item, so you can determine what to keep and what to toss.

2. Throw Out Expired Items or Food You Don’t Want

Even freezer items expire eventually. Throw away expired food or any items you aren’t going to eat anymore. This will help declutter your freezer and make it 10 times easier to organize.

3. Combine Duplicate Items

I was pretty shocked at how many duplicate items we had in our freezer. And I never would have known without this cleanout! We had not 2 but 3 bags of frozen blueberries, multiple bags of half-eaten baked goods, and several other duplicate items.

My husband does all the grocery shopping (we divide and conquer chores). I give him a weekly grocery list, usually going off of memory vs. physically checking what we actually already have. Be sure to do a quick inventory gut check before heading to the store so you don’t end up with a surplus of food you don’t have room for.

Where you can, combine like items into one bag or container, so you can get rid of extra bags and boxes. Because I’m gluten free, I have to keep all of my bread items in the fridge or freezer. For bread, buns, and bagels, combine what you can in a gallon-size freezer bag. This was incredibly helpful in making more room in our freezer, and it helps keep them fresh.

4. Wipe Your Freezer Clean

Freezer organization starts with having a clean freezer. I have no idea how the bottom of the freezer gets so dirty, but it does! If bags aren’t closed all the way, it’s so easy for crumbs or food to fall out and make the freezer pretty gross. Choose your favorite cleaner to wipe the freezer down. I use Clorox Wipes, so it’s clean and disinfected. Make sure it’s dry before you place your items back in.

5. Organize Your Freezer Items into Zones

Create zones for your food items so it’s easier to organize them and easier to find them! We drink a lot of smoothies, so we have a lot of bags of frozen fruit. I moved our freezer divider over, so it perfectly holds them in place and separates them from the rest of the items. For boxed items, I stored them in the top drawer, so they don’t get crushed living in the lower drawer.

My husband and I eat very little meat (mainly fish), so our freezer doesn’t get too crazy. My sister’s freezer is so stuffed, it barely opens! If you’re in this boat, you might benefit from freezer organizers. I’ve picked some awesome options below to create perfect freezer organization.

How to Maintain the Perfect Freezer Organization

Once you’ve gotten your freezer organized, you have laid the foundation for keeping it that way! Show your freezer some extra love, especially after grocery store trips when you’ll be shuffling things around to make room for new items. Also, give it periodic wipe downs to pick up any crumbs or food that may have dropped.

Follow my steps above to make sure you’re tossing out old items and combining things where needed, and your freezer will stay perfectly organized!
