When our house was remodeled, the kitchen and dining room were combined to create one large gourmet kitchen, with a small section at the end dedicated to a dining space.

I’m used to working with smaller dining rooms from our previous homes, but this one is next-level small. We’re working with roughly a 7’ x 7’ footprint, just enough room for a table and chairs without blocking cabinets or walkways. That’s about half the size of a standard dining room.

Even with the tight layout, I wanted this small modern coastal dining room to feel intentional rather than like an afterthought.

How to Design a Small Coastal Dining Room

Designing a dining room for a small space is completely doable when you start with the layout. The first step is figuring out exactly how much room you have to work with.

I always measure the space and use painter’s tape to map out where the table, chairs, and rug will go. This gives you clear boundaries and helps prevent overcrowding. Once you know your maximum dimensions, everything else falls into place.

From there, build a simple mood board with your favorite pieces. Seeing everything together makes it much easier to narrow down selections and create a cohesive modern coastal look.

Dining Room Rug Size for a Small Space

I always choose the rug first because it sets the tone for the entire room. In a small dining room, scale matters even more.

You’ll want 18–24 inches of rug beyond the table and chairs so chairs can slide in and out comfortably. Aim to leave at least 12 inches between the rug and surrounding walls to keep the space feeling balanced.

I found a light blue 5’ x 8’ rug that fit our small dining room perfectly and added just enough softness and color without overwhelming the space.

Choosing the Right Dining Table for a Small Dining Room

Because of the shape of our dining room, a rectangular dining table made the most sense. I chose a slightly smaller 60-inch table, which fits the room comfortably while still allowing seating for guests.

When shopping for a dining table for a small space, focus on two things: how many seats you realistically need and how much walking clearance the room allows. The right proportions make all the difference.

I went with a solid wood dining table, and the quality upgrade is noticeable. If you can swing it, solid wood always looks better and holds up longer than veneer options.

We also have a large kitchen island, so we use the dining table mostly when entertaining or when we want a more intimate dinner setting. That flexibility made choosing a slightly smaller table an easy decision.

Dining Chairs That Keep a Small Dining Room Light

For the chairs, I wanted something that felt organic, comfortable, and visually light. Wishbone-style chairs were the perfect fit for our modern coastal dining room.

They bring warmth and texture without adding visual weight, which is key in a dining room for a small space. They’re also incredibly versatile and lean more modern than traditional coastal, which I love.

In a small dining room, mirrors are your best friend. They reflect light and instantly make the room feel larger.

I added a wood-framed coastal mirror with a scrubbed pine finish to bring in warmth while keeping the look clean and elevated. It adds dimension without cluttering the wall and helps the dining area feel more open.

Styling a Small Modern Coastal Dining Room

A few intentional accessories go a long way in a small space. I kept decor minimal but meaningful.

I styled the table with a navy and white ceramic vase and added eucalyptus stems for a soft, organic touch. I don’t use many faux plants, but these are surprisingly realistic and easy to maintain.

The final piece was a Serena & Lily coastal bar cart, tucked into the corner of the dining room. It adds storage and function without taking up much space and helps the room feel complete.

Final Thoughts on Designing a Dining Room for a Small Space

A small dining room can absolutely be beautiful, functional, and full of personality. With the right proportions, thoughtful layout, and a few modern coastal elements, even the smallest dining room can feel intentional.

If you’re working with limited square footage, focus on scale, light materials, and multifunctional pieces. Size doesn’t matter nearly as much as smart design. For more small space tips, check out how I created a pantry for $500.

Modern Coastal Dining Room for Small Space: FAQs

What size dining table works best in a small dining room?

A 60-inch dining table is a great option for a dining room for a small space, as long as it allows enough clearance for chairs and walkways. Always measure your room first and map out the layout to avoid overcrowding.

How do you make a small dining room feel bigger?

Using lighter finishes, mirrors, and furniture with visual openness helps a small dining room feel larger. Keeping decor minimal and choosing pieces that don’t visually weigh down the space also makes a big difference.

Can a modern coastal style work in a small dining room?

Yes, modern coastal design works especially well in small dining rooms because it relies on light colors, natural materials, and clean lines. These elements keep the space feeling open, calm, and intentional rather than cluttered.

Should a small dining room have a rug?

A rug can anchor a small dining room beautifully as long as it’s sized correctly. Choose a rug that extends at least 18–24 inches beyond the table so chairs can slide in and out comfortably without catching.
