When I was looking for modern coastal living room inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram, all I saw were white sofas and chairs. They were GORGEOUS and really helped evoke that bright and airy coastal vibe. I of course talked my husband into buying the Ikea Ektorp sectional with light beige slipcovers, so I could have an Instagram-worthy coastal living room.

My husband thought I was insane for bringing white (light beige, but close enough) furniture into our house since we have two huge dogs, but I insisted it was fine! I mean, the slipcovers are washable! Well, I’m here to tell you, it sucks. I ended up washing those slipcovers constantly, and they’re a pain in the ass to get off and on the cushions. When I wasn’t washing them in the washing machine, I was spot cleaning them pretty much daily. It was an absolute nightmare.

Every other week, our sofa was disassembled for slipcover washing. I do not miss this scene!
Before we moved into our new house, I sold that sofa and decided to re-think things. I really wanted to decorate with leather furniture, but I had the hardest time finding any good inspiration. I do not believe in following strict design rules, but I also wasn’t sure a leather sofa would actually go with coastal style.
Will a Leather Sofa Go with Coastal Style?
A leather sofa will absolutely go with coastal style! In fact, I think it looks just as good as our old white sofa, but it’s so much more convenient to clean (not to mention more comfortable). Brown leather sofas are rich in color and provide a sense of sophistication to any home decor style. All you need are the perfect coordinating decorative pieces to pull off the coastal look.
I bought our brown leather sofa from Costco, and it’s one of the best decorating decisions I have ever made. It honestly looks like it came from Pottery Barn, but it was a fraction of the price. Now that I had settled on the sofa, it was time to start choosing the decor to create my dream modern coastal living room.

Since my leather sofa was dark brown, I wanted to make sure the room didn’t feel too dark and heavy. I decided to incorporate lighter furniture pieces to help keep the bright and airy signature coastal look I was going for.

How Do You Make a Leather Couch Look Coastal?
Natural materials are core to creating a modern coastal living room, and I found these gorgeous cane-accented beige chairs from Wayfair. I’ve searched for these chairs everywhere and unfortunately they’re sold out in every color. But I found a similar vibe in this braided armchair from Amazon that I really love! I
I already had a cane console table from Target that was in my old upstairs landing, and I thought it would be perfect for the living room. The one I bought is sold out, but I found a similar one from the same brand.
Lastly, I needed a coffee table. I’ve always bought faux wood coffee tables in the past, because they’re so much more affordable. But, I was never happy with the quality. Invest in solid wood furniture if you can. It makes a world of difference to the overall look of your space. I found this solid wood coffee table from Wayfair.
Lastly, infuse natural wicker baskets or trays as an easy way to bring in coastal style and lighter tones.
Now that I had my big furniture pieces nailed down, it was time to choose the modern coastal living room decor. The good thing about brown leather sofas is that they are really neutral and coordinate with any color palette.
I had a beautiful navy blue area rug from my old living room that I wanted to keep, so that served as the visual anchor for the room (similar rug). I also had these beautiful blue ombre vases that illuminate coastal vibes, and they worked perfectly on the console table.
Throw pillows are such an easy way to incorporate color and style into your living room decor. I picked up two different 24” navy blue throw pillows at Home Goods (no, they don’t have to match exactly!). Next, I found the perfect 22” navy striped pillowcases from Etsy. A navy and white abstract textured lumbar pillow from Target provided the perfect finishing touch (similar pillow). Popping the brown leather sofa with a mix of light pillows really helped brighten it up.
I found this insanely affordable large 40×40 blue abstract art from At Home for under $100. It looks just as pretty as more expensive pieces I was drooling over. I believe in investing in a couple really nice pieces and saving money on everything else. Look for dupes when you can. There is almost always something similar enough to whatever decor you’re looking for.
Since I wanted a modern coastal living room, I chose to go for gold when it came to metal finishes. Gold also compliments a brown leather sofa extremely well! I ordered a couple lamps from Target and Amazon, including a wood tripod wood floor lamp and glass table lamp (both with gold accents). Target also had this beautiful candle holder set.
Lastly, I found the perfect brass fireplace screen from Pottery Barn.
While white sofas look clean and serene, you can create a gorgeous modern coastal living room with brown leather sofas. I am so glad I decided on a leather sofa, and I have no plans to go back to a white couch!
