Tile and fixtures set the foundation for a coastal bathroom, but it’s the decor that truly pulls the look together. Even with a clear design direction, the finishing touches can shift the style — from traditional to modern, or Nantucket charm to California beachy. See how I used the perfect coastal decor pieces to set the tone for our bathroom renovation.

Coastal Bathroom Mirrors

A mirror does more than reflect — it bounces light, adds shape, and anchors your vanity wall. Early on, I wanted to do white mirrors but after moving away from gray marble floors and going with white for the floor tiles and wall subway tiles, it just felt like too much white. Because our fixtures and hardware were all polished nickel, this bathroom was feeling really sophisticated. I like an elevated look, but I also didn’t want this space to feel too traditional

Bringing in an organic material, like rattan, is the perfect way to ground a proper coastal bathroom with a relaxed and earthy vibe. Because I only had about 23″ of space for the mirrors to comfortably fit on either side of our center tower storage, I was looking for rectangle or oval mirrors.

Our contractor had the idea to do oval since our soaking tub is oval, and I thought that was a great idea! I am so glad I listed to him because our oval rattan mirrors are absolutely stunning. It’s the first thing people comment on when they see my pictures. Plus, they were much more affordable than the original white mirrors I was crushing on.

Coastal Vanity Lighting

For our bathroom, I chose the Amelie Sconce from Ballard Designs. I loved how the polished nickel finish tied in with the rest of our fixtures while still feeling soft and coastal. The tapered linen shade gives off the prettiest glow and adds just the right amount of texture against all the tile and mirrors.

Hanging a pair of these sconces on either side of the mirror keeps the light even and flattering, while also making the vanity wall feel intentional and finished.

Roman Shade with Classic Coastal Detail

For our bathroom window, I originally wanted to do the Pottery Barn Riviera Striped Roman Shade. I put these in the kitchen of our last home and LOVED them. The problem was, their sizing was way too limiting. If you have a window that fits their shades, I highly recommend them and you can check out my full review HERE.

Luckily, I found a custom white roman shade with navy ribbon border that ended up working perfectly. I love how simple and tailored it looks — crisp white for a clean backdrop with a coastal nod through the navy border. The best part is that it’s fully customizable by size, so I was able to get the perfect fit for our bathroom window without having to go super high-end.

Coastal Artwork That Feels Personal

Over the tub, I hung a black-and-white photograph of the Italian coast. The coastal scene ties perfectly into the bathroom’s seaside inspiration, while keeping the palette understated so the vanity remains the color moment in the room. I love how it nods to travel and coastal living without competing with the other finishes.

Functional Wood Accents with Coastal Style

coastal bathroom teak mat

Rather than going for a cotton bath mat for the shower, I opted for an teak wood bath mat. Teak is naturally resistant to moisture and mildew, which makes it ideal for bathrooms. It dries quickly, feels spa-like, and adds a warm, organic layer against all the polished tile and fixtures.

I also added a bamboo bathtub tray — functional and pretty — that’s perfect for holding a candle or a book. Together, these wood accents are as practical as they are stylish, making the bathroom feel more finished without sacrificing everyday function.

Over-the-Toilet Cabinet for Extra Storage

I am a huge fan of over-the-toilet storage. Shelves and cabinets can help keep toilet essentials (extra toilet paper, sprays, etc.) tucked away but still within reach. This cane accented wood cabinet blends seamlessly with the rest of the bathroom and makes the piece feel built-in rather than bulky. It’s one of those functional choices that also helps the room look polished and intentional.

The Small Details: Everyday Essentials

coastal bathroom hand soap

Even something as simple as hand soap can feel styled. I have been using Hand Ritual from Muse Apothecary (inexpensive and on Amazon!) for a few years. The clean scent and the simple bottle design blends right in with the rest of the space. It’s a small detail, but one that makes everyday use feel just a little more elevated.

Bringing It All Together

Tile and fixtures gave this bathroom its foundation, but it’s the mirrors, lighting, shade, storage, and little accents that made it feel complete. Each piece — from the polished nickel sconces to the teak bath mat — adds personality while keeping with the coastal look we wanted from the start. These finishing touches not only pulled the renovation together but also made the space feel like ours.

I hope this post gave you some good coastal bathroom decor ideas. Happy decorating!

Coastal Bathroom Decor FAQs

What type of mirror works best in a coastal bathroom?

It depends on the look you’re going for. Round mirrors nod to nautical style, while rectangular mirrors are timeless and versatile. I chose a polished nickel frame for our bathroom because it tied in beautifully with the fixtures.

Is teak or bamboo better for bathroom decor?

Both are great natural materials, but teak is naturally more water- and mildew-resistant, which makes it ideal for things like bath mats. Bamboo works beautifully for accents like trays and baskets.

How do you choose the right lighting for a coastal bathroom?

I wanted lighting that felt coastal but still timeless, which is why I chose polished nickel sconces with linen shades. They add warmth and tie in with the rest of the finishes without feeling trendy.

Do you need a window treatment in a bathroom?

I think so. A roman shade softens the space and adds a finished look. I chose a crisp white shade with a navy ribbon border to bring in a subtle coastal detail without overwhelming the room.

What small details make the biggest difference in bathroom decor?

For me, it’s the little everyday pieces — like hand soap in a bottle that looks as good as it smells. It’s an easy way to make a bathroom feel styled without much effort.
