When my husband and I bought our leather sectional and sofa from Costco a few years ago, I was adamant that our dogs were not allowed on them. Sure, we let them on our last Ikea sofa, but it was a nightmare trying to keep that thing clean. Leather is MUCH easier to clean than our last fabric couch, but I didn’t want to deal with the hair or potential scratches.

Two months after buying those sofas, I caved. What can I say? I love my dogs, and I love snuggling with them on the couch! We kept them off the front living room sofa because that truly was used for when we had guests over. But they had full reign of the leather sectional in our family room.

Our leather sofas were an investment, and I didn’t want our sectional to get damaged just so the dogs could hang out with us. So, I picked up some navy fleece blankets from Target. These blankets were….not stylish. They were also pretty low quality. I am meticulous about washing our sofa blankets weekly and after a month or two, our fleece blankets already had holes in them. But I figured they were dog blankets and didn’t have to look stylish. Plus, we hid them when guests came over.

We recently sold our last house, and the buyers bought both of our leather sofas (along with a ton of other furniture and decor!), so we bought a new leather sectional. Since I knew the dogs were going to be setting up camp on our new sectional just like they did our old one, we needed a new solution. I wanted dog blankets for the sofa that were both high quality and stylish, so we didn’t have to hide them in embarrassment every time someone came over.

So, I started researching online. There are so many dog blankets for sofas available. From waterproof options to blankets that literally cover the entire sofa. But I didn’t like any of these options. First of all, my dogs don’t pee on the couch. Secondly, a blanket that covers the entire sofa is just not cute in my opinion. I wanted a 100% cotton cable knit blanket that could double as a dog blanket, and I found the perfect one!

My blanket is a cream cable knit throw made of 100% organic cotton that is super soft. Because we have a sectional, I bought two of these blankets. I actually bought one to test out before committing to the other one. When I say this blanket is high quality, I mean it! I wash these blankets weekly at a minimum and more often if the dogs happen to drag dirt onto them mid-week. They’ve held up beautifully and it’s been about 6 months at the time of this post.

Just wash them on delicate and dry them on the lowest setting. They come with a laundry bag, but mine broke after a few washes. The zippers on those laundry bags are so cheap! But I wash the blankets together without a bag, and they’ve held up perfectly.

I love how stylish these throws look on the sofa so much that I don’t take them off when we have guests over. And because I keep them so clean, our friends and family don’t mind sitting on them. Plus, our dogs love to snuggle with them too!

Be sure to measure your sofa before buying a throw. My blanket size is 51×63” and doesn’t cover our entire sectional on the longer side. But that was okay for me! We have throw pillows that fill in the gap, so my dogs are never on the bare leather. If you have a larger sofa, go for their oversized option, which is 60×80”.

Coordinating a Dog Blanket for Sofa

My interior design style is very coastal. Our walls and built-in cabinets in our living room are Benjamin Moore White Dove, which is a creamy white. Since there are a lot of blues and creams in our living room, I bought these blankets in cream. If you’re worried about dirt showing, go for darker colors (there are tons of color options!). Either match the color of your sofa or coordinate with other colors in your home design.
